Kids Crafts – Homeschooling

Kids Crafts - Patchwork Easter Eggs:

Doing crafts with the kids is a very important part of homeschooling. Finding suitable kids crafts can be a very time consuming activity. Instead of wasting time looking for suitable crafts why not rather use our crafts and use your time much more productively.

There is also an excellent e-book that can save you hours of surfing the net for suitable kids crafts. The name of the e-book is 365 Easy Step-By-Step Kids Crafts. The crafts in this e-book can be adjusted to suit different ages and competency levels. You can use the kids’ crafts over and over again, every time producing a new and ”unique“ kid’s craft. I can truly recommend 365 Easy Step-By-Step Kids Crafts to all homeschoolers.

Now on to the promised craft

An Alternative Easter Egg Idea - Patchwork Easter Eggs

Making patchwork Easter eggs is a fun and easy alternative to painting Easter eggs and most of the time it is a lot less messy as a kids craft than painting Easter eggs. This is a fun kid’s craft that can form a part of your Easter decorations. Kids love doing crafts that gets used and are very proud of their ”creations.“ These eggs are obviously not edible Easter Eggs and in my mind it is a plus point as kids eat too much candy.

Here are the supplies you will need for this kids craft:

  • As many foam eggs as you want to make
  • A good quantity of straight pins
  • Assorted patterned fabrics
  • Fabric scissors
  • Assorted small buttons
  • Crafts glue
  • Assorted rickrack (zigzag) ribbons
  • Assorted ribbons
  • Assorted ribbon roses

This is what you have to do:

1.From your patterned fabrics you have to cut out odd-shaped pieces of at least 1 inch in diameter.

2. Now secure one of the pieces of fabric on an egg by pinning the corners down onto the egg.

3. Using the same method pin another piece of fabric to the egg and make sure that it slightly overlaps with the first piece of fabric.

4. Keep on doing this until the whole Easter egg has been covered.

Now you have to cut the ribbons and rickrack (zigzag) ribbons into different sizes as they are needed to cover the seams on your Easter egg.

5. Using your glue cover a thin line with glue over the seam lines of the fabric on your Easter egg.

6. Now you have to place ribbons or rickrack (zigzag) ribbons onto all the seam lines until they are all covered.

7. Let the seams dry for at lest one hour.

8. To disguise the places where several ribbons and fabrics meet, glue buttons on those places.

9. By using your fabric scissors make a small hole in the top of your egg.

10. To make a handle for your egg you have to do the following: You have to cut a 6 inch piece of ribbon, then you have to place some glue in the hole and push the ribbon in to form a handle.

11. Now you have to let it dry for at least an hour once again.

12. To make your bow you have to cut two pieces of ribbon about 12 inches long and whilst holding the pieces together you have to tie a bow.

13. Glue the bow onto the base of your ribbon handle and glue a ribbon rose onto the center of your bow.

14. Once again it is waiting time. Let it all dry again for at least an hour.

15. Your Easter eggs are now ready for use

A big part of the fun for this kids craft is hunting through the house for odd pieces of fabric and ribbons. Any fabric and ribbon is suitable, let your imagination run wild! It is of course also possible to make these eggs according to a special color theme if you have a color scheme for your Easter decorations.

Have fun doing this kids Easter craft as part of your homeschooling theme for Easter. Enjoy this fun Easter kid’s craft.
