Homeschooling

Home Schooling For South Africans

Teach your child to read with Frontline Phonics!

There are many different models that can be used forhomeschool homeschooling. You get the two extremes from the formal ”school“ way of teaching in a very structured curriculum to the complete informal way where the child is taught by practical life situations as they arise, and then you get everything in between.

What is the law in South Africa?

Frontline Phonics

Since 1996 homeschooling is allowed in South Africa

To homeschool children aged 15 and younger you have to register with the applicable Department of Education.

You have to stick to the minimum standards of Curriculum 2005 (what that really is, nobody seems to know, contact you local Education Department.

You can get help from the Pestalozzi trust. (www.pestalozzi.org )

The basics of how to do it:

  1. There is lots of teaching material available partly or completely on the computer.

  1. Teaching can be formal or informal, instead of formal teaching a child can do research on a subject that interests him or her.

  1. Research shows that the parent’s qualifications make no difference in the homeschoolers results.

  1. Some students write exams that are prescribed by the curriculum and others are assessed as they go by an educational psychologist.

  1. If the student wants to return to school he or she cannot be refused, their age minus six is the grade the student will be placed in.

  1. For matric they need to follow one of the formal curriculums of the eleven accredited examination boards. These boards are the nine provinces, the independent education board and BCVO.

  1. The local universities also accept the Cambridge curriculum.

  1. A curriculum can cost you anything from R600 to more than R10 000 a year per child.

  1. The popular pre-packed packages cost from R4 000 to R6 000 per year per child.

It is not known how many Homeschoolers there are in South Africa because not all Homeschoolers are registered. It is judged that there is about 30 000 to 120 000.

Many parents started homeschooling in South Africa because of the appalling state of education in South Africa and throughout the whole world. There are homeschoolers in the USA, Britain, Australia, Canada and New-Zeeland. Parents want their children to learn to think again, something that does not happen in the schools today.

Homeschoolers tend to have to spend much less time on their studies as a lot of time is wasted in schools. With homeschooling every student can work at his or her own pace and they tend to do more work in less time. This leaves a lot of time available for socializing and spending time as a family. Because the students spend more time with the family, the parents have more time for instilling Christian values in there children. Parents have more control over their children’s social life. Many parents homeschool because they want to give their children a ”Christian“ education.

As you can see, apart from legislation, there is not much difference in the homeschooling situation in South Africa and the rest of the world.
